black and grey tattoos

I have my heart set on a black and grey mermaid tattoo but when I discussed this with my tattoo artist he was very negative. He said it wouldn't last well, and tried to get me to go for a cartoon style design, which was totally not what I had in mind. I'm so confused. Does anyone have any experience of black and grey?

    Black and gray eventually might run together and be harder to touch up than color, but it can also look very cool.

    If the artist isnt giving you what you want, see somebody else. I cant tell you how important it is to find the right artist for you. Dont just go to the first artist you see. Ask him to draw you a sketch. I would visit at least 5 artists before picking on. Compare portfolios.
